Title Research: Red Lights (2012)
1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?
The opening sequence starts with the editing team showcasing the main actors with little white dots all around the background. It then shows the film director in the words of "a Rodrigo Cortex FIlm". The title of the film is then shown and then the cast list continued. After all the actors are named, the titles of the production team are recognized. People like the costume designer, editor, special effects, and production are named.
2. What connations do the images carry out? (how do they make you feel?"
The film opens with a black background with almost flashing lights as the main characters are named. Images of old polaroids of different bodies, skulls, and many pictures and statues of Jesus. The opening also includes many different types of ancient texts. Later in the opening, you see newspapers claiming to have seen a UFO and this gives a shock factor, leaving you wanting more. The newspaper, along with a landing spaceship gives you a sense of wonder.
3. How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
The genre is reinforced by the multiple God-like symbols using rosery and pictures of Jesus. The background images of X-rays, mathematical equations, and old pictures of what seemed to be dead people show off a very creepy theme. This may allow the audience to try and guess what the movie will be about after sensing the genre. The numerous pictures of blueprints and ancient writing give an uncanny feeling. As stated before, evidence of a UFO sighting was acknowledged. Technical codes such as glitches throughout the opening allow for an eerie effect. The use of blurred light streaks, swipes of white and grey, the fading in and out, the lights growing larger and larger till it's just white. Then you see a hand reaching from the darkness.
4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The amount of foreshadowing with the use of newspaper articles and images of past people allows for the mystery of what happens to stay alive. The audience will be taken through by the character. With only the opening sequence, you're only taken to a dark cellar and are told it holds secrets, it is up to the movie to connect the dots and the audience will be appealed to that aspect.
